- Network Operational Security Exercises
In order to ensure
continuous evaluation and improvement in Internet2's operational
practices, a recurring set of exercises have been initiated.
AbOSE, Abilene Operational Security Exercise, is the first of
these exercises. AbOSE was designed to examine the practices
and procedures of the Abilene NOC in response to security incidents.
The first AbOSE was held in November 2005; the public report
is available below. The full report is not available to the general
public due to the sensitivity of some of the materials discussed.
Additional exercises are currently being planned.
These include a second AbOSE scheduled for late summer 2005.
An international exercise planning group is currently being
gathered. This group will design and oversee an exercise involving
multiple, national-scale, research and education networks.

Introduction: AbOSE 2005
On
Tuesday 29 November 2005, the first Abilene Operational Security
Exercise (AbOSE) was held on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis,
Indiana. Eight individuals from the Network Operation Center
(NOC) from both the service desk and the engineering team were
assembled to discuss typical activities, documentation and
complete two "table
top" scenarios.
The linked document is a summary of the
official exercise report. Sensitive details have been removed
but the overall understanding and value of the exercise should
be evident. The official exercise report lists a set of observations
and recommendations for the NOC; these observations and recommended
responses will form the basis for follow up exercises.
