Salsa-Netc Working Group

Minutes | Mailing List | Documents | Links

The Salsa-Netc working group is dormant for now.
Please contact Steve Olshansky, Salsa-Netc working group flywheel, with questions or comments.

Background

Salsa has formed a new WG called "Netc" (pronounced "Net-cetera") to focus on issues that would benefit from promptly delivered position papers, or are too limited in scope to justify a separate group. Topics will be limited to those that will ultimately inform architectural vision and also have such urgency and interest as to draw a crowd.

Charter (Draft)

The Salsa-Netc Working Group will initially consider the following proposed topics:

1. Flow document: The value and art of using flow collection and analysis for improving network security, and a quick survey of the architectural aspects, tools, and issues.

2. Impacts of Multiple External Network Connections on Security Techniques: Classification of cases (i.e. multi-homing to single providers, multiple providers, backdoors, other protocols), and the overall impact on use of common techniques including firewalls, flow collection, routing authentication, IDS/IDP, and source address verification.

3. Security Aspects of IPv6: What tools work and what don't, and security implications of a dual-stack environment.

4. High Performance Security Appliances: For a variety of technical methods appropriate for security (including, but not limited to, stateless filtering, stateful filtering, policing/shaping, IDS, flow collection) this paper examines the dimensions of scaling (i.e. number of flows or sessions, number of bps and pps, load balancing) at speeds of 1 or 10 Gbps. Where current methods fall short, some architectural work-arounds may be considered.

5. Traceback: Campus tools and methods for tracking packets with forged addresses back to their source.

6. Routing Security: Examines the extent to which route authentication is used or needed in the R&E community.
