A brief summary of the 802.1x RADIUS authentication subgroup call was given.
This subgroup is planning a potential pilot project addressing institutions’
requirements to accommodate visiting scientists or similar temporary users requiring
network access. The subgroup is interested in providing both theoretical insight
and practical solutions. In the short term, the group proposes developing and
deploying an experimental RADIUS environment similar to the EduRoam RADIUS hierarchy.
The group will evaluate and potentially propose enhancements to the EduRoam
solution. A proposed pilot will also address policy issues for visiting scientists.
Please submit suggestions for a name for this subgroup to the NetAuth WG via
this list. Notes from these calls will be posted to the NetAuth list.
The EDUCAUSE Effective Practices group has a web form to submit case studies.
To date, no submissions for NetAuth related topics have been received. The group
discussed the need to identify areas of work that can be used as case studies.
It was suggested that providing an overview of the topic/effort would also benefit
the group. Providing secure network access for devices not under direct network
operations management is the basis for desired case studies. Vendors may also
contribute case studies. The group will approach this provide a common taxonomy
for NetAuth initiatives.
Three topics discussed in the Strategies document that are not addressed in
the Effective Practices Guide are network device management, dynamic network
data collection and network registration. The Effective Practices WG will solicit
input from the NetAuth WG when the Effective Practices Guide will be revised
next year. Once the appendix has been added to the Strategies document, the
document (as draft three) will be published. A supplemental call may be scheduled
to discuss this in more detail.
The group discussed the need to further elaborate on how NAT devices affect NetAuth. This topic may be included in the Strategies document.
Since the next regularly schedule call occurs on the US Thanksgiving Day holiday,
the next call is Thursday, December 9, 2004 at 12:00 PM ET.
