*Discussion Items*
*REN-ISAC Workshop*
Discussion continued from the last call about a grant awarded to
Internet2 which will support the work of the working group, including
related workshops and other events to provide information sharing. The
funding must be used by June 30, 2007.
Chris spoke with Ken and others at Internet2 for more details about
how the funds will be used. He confirmed that one of the items to be
funded will be a half-day workshop for REN-ISAC members following the
security professionals conference in April. The REN-ISAC workshop will
take place on Thursday afternoon immediately following the security
professionals meeting. The CSI2 working group will build the agenda
during conference calls. The workshop attendance will be capped at 50
and there may be a nominal registration cost.
Chris asked for feedback and thoughts on the format for the workshop.
In general, the working group feels the structure should be different
from Educause meetings – perhaps a rough agenda, but very conversation
oriented covering a variety of topics.
With potentially 50 people in attendance, however, the working group
decided that a more structured agenda is necessary. Chris suggested
that the working group determine desired outcomes for the workshop and
build the agenda from those. This may be a good place to provide
information on new service offerings, for example.
Building the agenda for the half-day workshop will continue to be on
the agenda for these conference calls.
*CSI2 Face-to-Face*
Chris reported that the Internet2 funding would also be appropriate
for supporting a face-to-face meeting of CSI2. He proposed a one day
or day-and-a-half meeting sometime in January or February, probably
somewhere in the northeast, since CSI2 membership is concentrated
there. The meeting would be used for discussions on all of the working
group's responsibilities and progress, including topics like RENOIR
and the shared darknet. CSI2 could also invite a few other people who
would have an interest in these topics and/or could be a resource for
CSI2. Chris will send a few proposed dates to Renee and will choose a
location.
Phil asked about the ultimate goal of the I2 funding. Chris reported
that the product would be documents and work product; for example,
reporting some sort of progress on RENOIR and progress in the shared
darknet. He also mentioned that NSF recently publicized an RFP that
may cover some of the work of CSI2. Perhaps Internet2 could form a
partnership with one or more universities in submitting a proposal.
The deadline is January 8.
*Shared darknet*
Brian has sent information to Indiana U. concerning transferring data,
automation, and verification of data integrity. Brian also needs to
know the desired format for submitting data. Chris has been sending
flow data that has already gone through a flow filter on the
university's end. One future plan is to develop a feature set for
those interested in submitting data. Formatting and other data
requirements should be written into policy.
*RENOIR*
Phil reported not receiving any feedback on the information he has
posted to the wiki and which was distributed to the email list. He
continues to work on documents that can be publicly released. He has
streamlined the current document to make it clearer and about half the
length. An action item for the CSI2 group is to read Phil's document.
Chris also asked that the document become part of the CSI2 web site,
to make it more accessible.
Phil has been working on the main library for RENOIR and working on
debugging encryption issues. The work is progressing and there should
be something to release to the group in a week or two.
The call scheduled for Thanksgiving Day has been cancelled. The next
call is Dec. 7.
